Sep 16: Welcome

Greetings, lonesome traveller, and welcome to my humble website.

First and foremost: Happy Software Freedom Day 2006! Yes, it is once again that joyous time of the year when people all over the world come together to celebrate the miracle that is Free/Libre and/or Open Source Software. Whether you want to increase awareness by exercising your right to Free as in Speech or just party and get some free as in beer, it's satisfaction guaranteed. Now I come to think of it, I haven't come together with anyone today trying to get this website up and running. Oh well, I'll just have a beer that I don't have to pay for while writing this. That doesn't make me look like a sad nerd, does it?
Nah.

By now you're probably thinking: "Who the fudge is this guy and is this rambling going anywhere?". That's a good point. To answer the first part of that question: my name is Sam Geeraerts and I live in Laakdal, Belgium. I've been a GNU/Linux users since 2001 and hooked on Libre Software ever since. My favorite distros are Debian and Ubuntu. My favorite editor has yet to be created, but as long as it can highlight some syntax and does Unicode I'm happy. I work as a programmer, which is coincidentally also one of my hobbies. When I'm not doing that you can find me reading fantasy and computer stuff, tinkering with my (or someone else's) computer(s) or on some forum.

So let me explain what you will find on your future visits to this website. The idea is that I'll be writing about Libre Software and all things related (books, programming, how-to's, hardware reviews, ...). I'll probably also want to get some personal frustrations off my chest. But don't worry, those are mostly about things not being Libre. And if they're not, I'll try to squeeze in some Libre stuff anyway.

My mother tongue is Dutch and some things I will only be of interest to Dutch speaking people. So not everything will be in English. Seeing I live in a bilingual country I might even put in a French word or two. (Actually, Belgium has three official languages, but I'm sure my fellow countrymen of the German speaking persuasing aren't interested in me telling them I love them.) Oh yeah, the title of this blog in no way reflects my ability to speak Spanish. I don't.

Finally, to keep you on the edge of your seat until my next post, here are some teasers:

  • Getting that crappy Medion MD 41300 laptop to work with Ubuntu
  • Getting an Acer Aspire 5024 WLMi to work with Ubuntu
  • How sucky is the TomTom ONE?
  • Steps to a more Libre world
  • And: The Quest for a decent webhost

If this has already been done, let me know then I won't bother. If on the other hand, you are anxiously awaiting my writings, don't hesitate to flame me about it. If you have any questions about me or this website, be sure to ask them frequently because every website needs a FAQ, right? No, seriously, once will do just fine. I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Regards,

samgee
