El Mundo Libre

There was a garage sale in our town last weekend: the perfect opportunity to get rid of some crap. I was also planning on making a whole Ubuntu showcase with 2 computers and 3 screens, but due to grave network failure on Friday I just ended up continuously playing my Elephants Dream DVD on my laptop with some banners above that. Most of the people that came by couldn't care less about computers, but I managed to give away 3 Ubuntu CD's. One of those I gave to a kid that lives just a few houses from ours. He came back twice: once to ask how to get it working and the second time to ask how to get rid of it. Although he played games on his pc it turned out to be a dinosaur with only 14 GB of disk space. Apparently, Ubuntu's bite out of that was too big for him. He brought his computer along and while I undid Ubuntu we talked about the cough hypothetical cough problems and dangers of running illegal software and P2P software. He looked a bit scared, but not scared enough to switch to Linux or even Firefox. Maybe we'll talk again when he gets a new computer.

More importantly, I made an unexpected 130 EUR from the sale, mostly from comic books. Looking back on it I probably could have made more, but I was already glad to be rid of it. I will not spend this money on beer, nor on hardware, nor on books. No, I'm going to give this money to a libre software project. I haven't yet decided which one, so if you know or work on a project that is in desperate need of some cash let me know and I'll take it into consideration. I only want to use a bank transfer to send the money so that limits the options a bit. And if you're interested in some of the stuff I have left, all the money I make from that will also go to libre software so you're welcome to give a bit more than you normally would.
