Nov 12: Peachy

Peach is the Blender Foundation's second open movie project, and it's a movie with my name on it. Literally! I found out today that they've started taking pre-orders for the DVD, so I ordered a copy immediately. This means my name will appear in the end credits. Instant fame for only 42.72 €! It's like having your name in the Linux kernel source code without actually having to learn C. If you think that's a lot of money to be forever known as One Who Has Donated To Libre Software And Arts, there's more. There will be not one but two discs, containing a high quality version in both European and US TV format, as well as one in HD. There will also be commentaries, storyboards and other extras. All content will be released under a Creative Commons license, which means it will be free to copy and reuse. The discs will have no CSS or other form of copy protection on them, so they can be legally and easily played with libre software. Even the source material will be provided, including tutorials on how to use them. So if you don't like a particular scene, you can just replace it with your own. And of course your money will be put to good use, helping Blender become one of the top products the libre software community has to offer.

Having read the website more thoroughly than when the movie was first announced, it looks like it's not going to be the somewhat full-length film I thought it would be. But on the other hand, unlike Elephants Dream it's going to be funny and furry. It will also be better organised than the previous movie. Not that that was a bad movie, but it was kind of strange, which made it unsuited as a showcase for passers-by of what libre software can do. Cute animals on the other hand lure in the children. And those children bring their parents who can than be made aware about the benefits of libre software. My package should be in the mail around April or May, which is very much in time for the next garage sale. If only I had a projector and a dark garage.
