How do we make the average non-geek aware of libre software? We could tell our friends and family about it, we could e-mail local schools, companies and governments, we could communitize the community, we could organize install parties, conferences and annual celebrations. We could even advertise in the New York Times.
One thing that we could really use is a poster boy (or girl): someone like Bono, but shouting "Free Software" instead of (or in addition to) "World Peace". We now may have found that man in Stephen Fry. A funny and intelligent celebrity as him certainly can do more to popularize free software with one article than any of us could accomplish in a whole year. Not that he sings the praise of freedom much in his article (in fact, he's a Mac user and we all now what they're like, right?
), but at least its something.
Are you a celebrity and using free software (I'm looking at you here, Michael Jackson)? Then do like Mr. Fry and get the word out. Slip it into an interview occasionally, write a song about it or use it in your scandals (use a "Edited with Kino" watermark in your private video and save them as Ogg Theora).
